FENCES: a project in public space for Fürstlich Drehna, Germany, Art Summer, 2002. Background of the project. Short description:
„The village of Fürstlich Drehna is characterized by two different areas: the castle area with the mote and the village with the characteristic double-green. The Green lies south of the market place and forms the nulceaus of the village. Originally it was obvious as a double green; today it is built on and estranged.“ (Kulturlandschaft Fürstlich Drehna)

A Green is defined as public space. The Green in Fürstlich Drehna is, for the most part, privately owned and built on. The project FENCES should redefine the Green as public space and as the nucleus of the village; through the opening up of borders, new definitions and the use of thegreen as temporary project space, the village inhabitans should be again become aware of its original use.
FENCES are usually used to protect, to hide; they close one out of private ground and underline this this exclusion. FENCES were used as theme and symbol for the new definition and opening up of the Green as public space. They defined the borders of the Green and underlined its historical form. The FENCES which surrounded the Green and defined it as private were symbolically removed, moved to other areas of the Green, rolled up and installed as FENCE posts. The posts defined the outline of the Green. The FENCES were packed with white and „erased“, used as white lines defining along with the posts the ground plan of the Green.
