MASAO

Dieser Film entstand 1969 in der Künstler-Wohngemeinschaft Parkgasse 1.

Damals gehörte Wien noch vornehmlich den Wienern und anders aussehende Menschen aus fernen Ländern waren neugierig beobachtete exotische Phänomene. Masao war ein sagenumwobener rücksichtslos lustvoll-verrückter Wanderstudent, der sich einige Zeit in unserer offenen Gemeinschaft aufhielt.
Während des Abspielens dieses stummen 8mm Films kamen nach und nach einige der Mitbewohner in den Raum und kommentierten die Details ohne zu wissen, dass ich eine Tonbandaufnahme gestartet hatte. Ich versuchte nun, diesen Film als unnachahmliche avantgardistische Neuheit anzupreisen, dass der Film schon ohne Ton sehr gut sei, und wenn nicht, erst der noch nicht vorhandene Ton den Film zu einem Meisterwerk erblühen lassen werde. Dem wurde heftig widersprochen, es wäre viel besser ins Kino zu gehen und sich einen ''Oswald Kolle-Film'' anzusehen....
Eine lustvolle Parodie auf die schon damals vorhandene langweilige und bedeutungsschwangere Ernsthaftigkeit des Experimental- und ''Avantgardefilms''.

This film was made in 1969 in the artists’ commune at Parkgasse 1.

At that time, Vienna still belonged primarily to the Viennese, and people from distant countries who looked different were curiously observed as exotic phenomena. Masao was a legendary, recklessly pleasure-seeking and eccentric wandering student who stayed for a while in our open community.

While this silent 8mm film was being shown, several of the other residents gradually came into the room and began commenting on the details, unaware that I had started a tape recording. I then tried to promote this film as an inimitable avant-garde novelty, claiming that the film was already very good without sound - and if not, that the still-missing sound would ultimately allow it to blossom into a masterpiece. This was vehemently rejected: it would be much better to go to the cinema and watch an “Oswald Kolle film”…

A playful parody of the already prevalent, tedious, and portentously serious tone of experimental and “avant-garde” film.
