Gift Economy Worker Kyoto

Im Oktober 2010 trug Christoph Schwarz die Idee zu einem partizipativen Experiment an "hanare" – einem Café mit sozial/politischen Anspruch und Kulturprogramm im Tempeldistrikt Kamiyoku in Kyoto / Japan – heran: Er bot sich selbst als kollektives Eigentum dem Verein an, im Zeitraum von 2 Wochen könne "hanare" mit diesem Besitz wie beliebt verfahren.

Da dieser Vorschlag durch Mehrheitsbeschluß abgelehnt wurde, mussten wir über andere Varianten nachdenken: Hanare Selbsverständnis steht in klarer Gegnerschaft zu hierarchischen Strukturen, so konnte ich das Kollektiv nur überzeugen, indem ich dieses unterwürfige Angebot von 2 Wochen kostenloser Arbeit in ein Geschenk uminterpretierte. Trotzdem setzten wir einen Vertrag auf, um hanares Recht festzuschreiben, meine Arbeitskraft sowohl für die eigenen Bedürfnisse, als auch zum Wohle der Allgemeinheit einzusetzen. Freunde, Nachbarn und Gäster der „Social Kitchen“ sollten mich verwenden dürfen- als Gegenleistung würde hanare Verpflegung, Kleidung und Unterbringung zu Verfügung stellen.

In October 2010, Christoph Schwarz proposed a collective experiment to “hanare”, a self-titled “culture and social center with kitchen” in the Kamiyoku dictrict, Kyoto, Japan, with his physical self in the very center: He offered himself being their “collective property” for the limited time of 2 weeks. Hanare could use him to serve their very own purpose, whatever this might be.

“As this proposal was rejected by majority vote, we developed another guideline for this social experiment. Hanare and its members see themselves as strict opponents of vertical hierarchies, and I could convince them only by reinterpreting my submissive offer into a gift. The 2 weeks of free work are now a present between friends. Nevertheless, we signed a contract, giving hanare the right to use my labour for their own needs as well as to give it away to the public (if it serves for the “collective good” according to hanare). Friends, neighbors, and guests of the "Social Kitchen" would be allowed to use me—in return, hanare would provide food, clothing, and accommodation.”
