Ephesos - The Imagination of History

Zum hundertjährigen Jubiläum der Ausgrabungen in Ephesos schaffen wir dort auf Einladung des Österreichischen Kulturinstitutes in Istanbul 1995 die Ausstellung The Imagination of History. Mit österreichischen, amerikanischen und türkischen KünstlerInnen gehen wir daran, die historisierende Inszenierung der Ausgrabungen zu unterlaufen. Zwei Wochen lang sehen sich abertausende TagestouristInnen mit den Interventionen zeitgenössischer KünstlerInnen konfrontiert. Ein Geschichtswissen abfragendes Computerspiel oder ein zwischen antiken Tonscherben in einer Erdgrube platzierter Fernseher brechen das romantische Geschichtsbild der Besucher.

To mark the centenary of the excavations at Ephesus, we created the exhibition "The Imagination of History" there in 1995 at the invitation of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Istanbul. Working with Austrian, American, and Turkish artists, we set out to subvert the historicizing presentation of the excavations.

For two weeks, tens of thousands of day tourists were confronted with the interventions of contemporary artists. A computer game testing historical knowledge and a television placed among ancient pottery shards in an earthen pit shattered the visitors' romanticized view of history.
